  1. Courses in Latin are offered through the Department of Classical Studies.
  2. Students should consult with the departmental undergraduate advisor for the latest information on course offerings. Some courses are offered in rotation.
  3. Senior standing in Latin is normally defined as successful completion of LAT 201 and LAT 202; exceptional students may also be admitted to 300- or 400-level courses with instructor's permission.

Introductory Latin 1
A course designed for students beginning the study of Latin or who have not yet reached the level expected in LAT 201/202. Although the teaching approach emphasizes exposure to simple texts as soon as possible, students desiring minimal competence in reading should go on to do LAT 102.

Continuation of LAT 101. Most of the rules of Latin grammar will be covered by the end of the year, and students should have a minimal competence in reading prose texts; but for the remaining grammar and further practice students should go on to do LAT 201.

A course designed to follow LAT 201, including both literature and grammar review. Authors normally read are Vergil and Ovid.

Intermediate Latin: Translation and Interpretation
A selection of unadapted material from one or two authors or an investigation of selected themes or topics at the intermediate level. Authors such as Livy, Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Vergil, or Ovid may be studied. Topics may include desire, death, war, identity, or a specific genre such as tragedy, to name but a few.
